Description<\/strong>
\nCarludovica palmata, popularly known as paja toquilla (toquilla straw), or jipijapa. It is a species belonging to the Cyclanthaceae family.\n\nIt is not a true palm but it is related to these because it belongs to the same order as the spathifloras. It is actually a herbaceous plant 1.5 to 2.5 m high, without a visible stem. \n\nIt has simple leaves, grouped and forming a rosette, with blades up to 65 cm long, fan-shaped, folded and with serrated edges. Its leaves differ from the leaves of true palms in that they do not have a sharp lamina-like structure at the junction of the stalk and leaflets.\n\nIt multiplies vegetatively because it does not produce viable seeds, it also differs from palms in that it does not develop a woody trunk. Its fruit, up to 15 cm long, is fleshy, green in color and orange inside.\n\nOne of the most relevant uses of this plant is the handicraft. <\/span><\/p>\n

Handicraft use<\/strong>
\nCultivated from Central America to Bolivia, especially in Ecuador and Panama, the soft, flexible and durable fibers are used to weave hats and other items.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
