It comprises about 1000 species of rosulate or rarely, woody appearance.

They are mostly herbaceous plants with short stems, epiphytes, although some species of the genus have erect stems up to 3 m tall.
Their leaves are alternate, simple, rigid, narrow, entire or more often prickly serrate.
In some genera of Bromeliaceae, such as the genus Aechmea, the sheathing leaf bases form "cisterns" of rainwater and humus and organic remains of atmospheric dust.
The fruits are yellow or pinkish in color; fleshy and with flattened seeds.

Historically, plants of the genus Bromelia, due to the morphological characteristics of the leaves with thorny edges, are used for the construction of living fences. In livestock farming, these species are food and represent a source of water in very dry places; in addition, their leaves have good quality fibers for production on a commercial scale; however, they are currently only studied from an ecological, taxonomic and ethnobotanical point of view.

Ethnobotany
The pulp of the fruits of the genus Bromelia has an important amount of proteins, as well as the minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and phosphorus. Its fruits are considered to have high nutritional value in relation to their mineral content, since 100 g of fruit pulp provide the recommended intake of calcium (1300 mg), magnesium (420 mg) and manganese (2.3 mg), for adults.

Would you like to visit the Living Lab Young Living Academy?

We invite schools to visit this valuable Young Living Academy space.

To coordinate a visit, please send an email to info@fundacionyoungliving.org

Bromelia Bromeliaceae Descripción Forman una gran e importante familia de plantas monocotiledóneas que consta de hierbas perennes terrestres o epifitas, o arbustos.
