Description<\/strong>
\nThey are herbaceous perennial plants that have a large rhizome above or slightly below the surface. The size of its leaves is between 20 to 150 cm long, with an arrowhead shape. Due to their shape and size they are often known as elephant's ear.\nSome of its most relevant uses are ornamental and nutritional.<\/p>\n

Ornamental use<\/strong>
\nIt grows throughout the year in tropical and subtropical areas. In temperate regions, it is used as an ornamental, planted outdoors, in the ground or in large pots, during the summer, and dug up and stored during the winter. Practically, it can grow in areas with any temperature, as long as the summer is warm.<\/p>\n

Food Use<\/strong>
\nThey are cultivated for their edible tubers, a typical starchy food in several places in the tropics where they are eaten as potatoes.<\/p>\n

Cultivation<\/strong>
\nThe root tuber is usually planted near the surface. Once planted, the first signs of growth appear between the first and third week. As an adult, it needs at least 1 m to develop properly and does best in compost-rich soil and shade, although it will grow well in soil that retains moisture. These plants should not be in dry soils for a long time, as, if this happens, their leaves will wither. Watering it can help it to recover, as long as it is not already too dry. If it is fertilized periodically (every 3 or 4 weeks) with any common fertilizer it will grow much more.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
